Here's the most common AI workflow for product managers right now: open ChatGPT, paste in some customer feedback, ask for a summary, copy the output, paste it into a Google Doc, reformat it, and move on to the next task.
It feels fast. It feels like progress. And it's almost entirely wasted motion.

I saw this firsthand. One of my product leads was excited about what they could create with ChatGPT — PRDs, competitive briefs, strategy docs. But when I watched their actual process, they had a prompt saved in Notepad that they pasted into a new chat window, then spent twenty minutes answering questions about the company and product before getting anything useful. The excitement was real. The workflow was broken.
The Copy-Paste Trap
There are three specific failures baked into the way most PMs use AI today. None of them are obvious while you're in the middle of doing the work. They only show up when you zoom out and look at what the PM team is actually producing over weeks and months.
Every Conversation Starts From Zero
You open a new chat. You paste in your product description. You explain who your users are. You describe the competitive landscape. You give the AI enough context to be useful — and then it gives you something decent.
Tomorrow, you do the same thing again. Different task, same setup. You re-explain the product. You re-describe the personas. You re-paste the competitive context. The AI has no memory of yesterday. It doesn't know what you told it last week. Every session is a blank slate.

No. That synthesis lives in a chat history somewhere — or more likely, in a Google Doc you copied it into. The PRD is a new conversation. The connection between research and spec exists only in your head.
This is the accumulation problem. In a functioning PM operation, insights should feed strategy, strategy should feed specs, specs should inform launch plans. From "AI Assistant" to "AI Infrastructure"
The mental model shift matters more than any specific tool choice.
Most PMs think about AI as an assistant. "I use AI to help me write PRDs." "I use AI to summarize research." "I use AI to draft status updates." The operative word is "I." It's a personal productivity tool — something one PM uses to do one task slightly faster.
AI infrastructure is a different concept entirely. It's not "I use AI." It's "my team runs on AI." The distinction is the difference between one PM having a helpful chat window and an entire PM operation running on shared context, shared skills, and shared outputs.
Think about how engineering teams work. They don't each write code in their own private text editors with no shared repository. They have version control, CI/CD pipelines, shared libraries, coding standards, and review processes. The infrastructure makes the team more than the sum of its individuals.
